Highway 12 Scenic Byway

[Zion] [Grand Canyon – Kanab]
[Grand Staircase] [Bryce] [No. 89] [Cedar Breaks] [Capitol Reef] [Southeast] [Arches-Canyonlands] [Green River] [Price] [Ultimate Tour]
If I had to recommend just one thing to do in southern Utah, it would have to be a drive along Highway 12. This is one of the prettiest roads in the whole United States. It cuts through the heart of southern Utah and presents the essence of the spirit of southern Utah. Do not miss this road on your trip to southern Utah.

You drive right through this canyon as you travel Highway 12. Include are some interesting tunnels carved right through the red rock fins.

Bryce Canyon National Park

There is a whole section dedicated to this national park, but it still is part of Highway 12, so we just had to include a link to it from here.

Kodachrome Basin

Just fifteen minutes off of Highway 12, this basin offers some quiet hikes and some unique petrified geysers, and don’t miss the grand parade showing continuously.

Hole in the Rock Scenic Backway

An optional trip, but if you have some time there are some fun sites along this road. Take a quick look and if you are interested you can spend a few hours or a day.

Slickrock Scenery

Between Escalante and Calf Creek is this wonderful section of road that crossed the slickrock. I just had to show it to you to entice you to be sure to include Hwy. 12 in your southern Utah vacation.

Lower Calf Creek Falls

My favorite family hike in southern Utah. This 2 hour round trip hike leads you through red rock ledges, rock art, streams and a magical water fall.

The Hogs Back

This quarter mile stretch of Hwy. 12 leads along the very ridge of the slickrock with cliffs off both sides it makes for a fun drive.

The Burr Trail

The Trail is paved for the first ten to fifteen minutes and leads into a wilderness of slick rock and isolation. The road begins on the south end of the town of Boulder.

Anasazi Indian Village State Park

Ruins and a great visitor center, the Anasazi Indian Village State Park is located in the middle of the town of Boulder.

The Boulder Mountain Views

Highway 12 leaves Boulder and heads straight up and over the Boulder Mountains, topping off at 9,000 feet. The views of the surrounding areas area wonderful.
